What the content is

General information and editorial opinion about consumer products, based on published manufacturer specifications and arithmetic derived from them. It is written to help you make a buying decision.

What it is not

• It is not professional advice. Not from a mechanic, an electrician, a builder or an engineer. We hold no professional credentials and we say so plainly on our methodology page.
• It is not based on hands-on testing. We have not tested the products we write about and we do not own them. Every specification we publish is attributed to the manufacturer that published it.
• It is not a guarantee of anything. Products change, manufacturers revise specifications, and listings are discontinued. We review pages on the schedule set out in the editorial policy, and information can still be out of date between reviews.

Safety

Several topics on this site touch on things that can injure you: working under a vehicle, garage door springs and cables, electrical circuits, combustion heaters in enclosed spaces, and fitting traction devices at the roadside.

Where we describe a procedure, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific product and vehicle, and if a job is beyond you, hire someone. We are not responsible for injury, damage or loss arising from anything you do after reading this site.

Some specifics we repeat throughout, because they matter: never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack; never touch a garage door’s torsion spring, cables or bottom brackets; never run a combustion heater without the ventilation its manual requires; and check your owner’s manual before fitting any traction device.
