Cable chains vs link chains

Links grip harder. Cables fit cars that links physically cannot. On a great many modern vehicles that is not a preference, it is a constraint.

Question one, which usually settles it

Open the owner’s manual before you compare anything else. It publishes the clearance available around each tire, and it will say one of three things: chains permitted with a stated clearance, low-clearance or SAE Class S chains only, or chains not permitted at all.

A very large number of modern cars fall into the middle case. Suspension and body packaging have tightened over two decades, and the space between the tire and the strut on a current compact crossover is frequently not enough for a conventional link chain to rotate without contacting something.

If your manual specifies low-clearance or Class S, the comparison is over: you are buying cables, and the rest of this page is about what that means rather than whether to do it.

What links actually do better

Links bite. A steel link presented edge-on to packed snow digs into it, and in deep, rutted conditions that mechanical engagement is meaningfully better than what a cable pattern achieves.

They also last longer. Cable wears faster on any bare pavement you have to cross, and cable chains are more often retired because the cable has thinned than because anything broke.

If your vehicle has the clearance and you drive genuine mountain snow rather than crossing an occasional snowy section, links are the stronger tool and the price difference between the two is small.

What cables do better, besides fitting

Ride quality, and it is not a trivial point on a long descent. Cables present a lower profile to the road, so the vibration and the noise are markedly less. On a pass where you may be on chains for an hour, fatigue is a real safety input rather than a comfort one.

Cables are also lighter to lift and easier to lay out around a wheel in the cold, which matters more than product pages suggest.

Self-tensioning matters more than the cable-versus-link choice

Traditional chains of either type need to be fitted, driven a short distance, and then re-tightened, because they settle onto the tire as it rotates. That second stop is the step people skip when it is dark and cold, and a loose chain is how chains damage cars: it whips against the wheel arch and the suspension.

Traction devices are not universal. They are sized to a range of tire size codes, and a listing claiming to fit everything is either using a very loose definition of fit or is not being specific about which sizes it actually covers.

Are cable chains as good as link chains?

Not for outright grip in deep snow or on thick ice, where links bite mechanically. Cables are better where clearance is limited, which on modern cars is common, and they ride far more smoothly. For most passenger vehicles on most roads, cables are the correct compromise.
